KENT HAIR SALON ADAPTS PREMISES TO SUPPORT MYNEWHAIR CLIENTS

A Kent-based salon has adapted its premises to support those affected by medical hair loss.

Partners Hair and Beauty, which is based in Sidcup, Kent, has created a private area within the salon where they now provide their wig-customisation service, advice, and support to customers.

Director Shobie Lee has completed one of mynewhair’s training seminars for hair professionals and has become part of the charity’s 800-strong network of Salons That Care across the UK and Ireland.

The charity, mynewhair, was founded and inspired by professional stylist Trevor Sorbie MBE, is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2016/17. mynewhair provides advice and support to anyone who has experienced medical hair loss and has a national support network of independent salons and trained hair professionals who provide a wig-customisation service for their clients.

Shobie, a consultant designer with 42 years’ of salon experience, said: “I love designing hair for my clients and making them feel wonderful. I joined mynewhair because I wanted to help those affected by medical hair loss feel amazing and support them through what can be a traumatic time in their lives.

“The training with Trevor and his team was inspirational and has given me a lot of confidence thanks to all of the knowledge I’ve acquired. The support from mynewhair enabled me to start offering a wig-customisation service in July and within the past 4 months, I’ve helped over 40 clients who have suffered hair loss through illness or cancer treatment.

“I’m absolutely delighted to now have their new facility for clients. It provides a welcoming and relaxed area for people experiencing medical hair loss to gain advice and support in private as well as somewhere to choose and find the right style for their own wigs.”

The private area is available to men and women affected by medical hair loss and is where they can receive an initial consultation to find out their needs as well as have their wig-customisation appointment.

Trevor Sorbie MBE, the founder of mynewhair, said: “It is fantastic news that Partners Hair and Beauty have this wonderful new facility to accommodate those affected by medical hair loss. We greatly value their work to make a space where clients can have some privacy to discuss their needs and ask for advice.

“The addition of this room to the salon shows Shobie’s commitment providing a caring and sensitive service for her clients. It is thanks to hair professionals like Shobie we can, as a charity, help those who suffer from medical hair loss!”

Since July, Shobie has helped to promote mynewhair and her wig-customisation service by attending the Queen Mary’s Family Fun Day to celebrate the opening of their new Cancer Unit and Kidney Centre. She also held a talk at Sloane Hospital in Beckenham for women affected by cancer.

“The service that I provide brings back the sparkle in my client’s eyes. It’s heart-warming when clients say that they feel alive again or that their wig is better than their own hair.

“Its comments like this that have made me realise just how important it is to provide wig-customisation to those who need it. That is why I have and intend to continue to talk about mynewhair and about my service to raise awareness and help as many people as I can.”
